Sacraments

The sacraments are the way we focus and celebrate our life together in the Church, and grow into the Body of Christ. They are actions of Christ, celebrated by a bishop, priest or deacon, in which Jesus enters into our lives and gives grace for Christian living. They are the tangible presence of Christ made a reality for us here and now. Every Sacrament is celebrated in a particular way and has a particular effect. Below you will find a short explanation for each of the seven sacraments of the Church, along with information about their availability.

Baptism – Please contact the parish office to collect a form, or download it from our website. Once the form is completed, bring it to the office. After preparation, the priest will meet with you to arrange a convenient date for the baptism. Please do not book a date before discussing it with the priest.

Confirmation/First Holy Communion – Applications open in June every other year. The programme usually begins in July and runs until October. Details about preparation and enrolment are available through the Parish Office.

Eucharist – For the sick, disabled, or housebound, please contact the parish office by email or phone with the person’s address. Either the priest or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will bring the Eucharist.

Confession – Confessions are heard on Wednesdays from 6:00-6:45 pm at St Patrick’s, and on request at the Divine Infant of Prague, Syston.

Anointing of the Sick – Please contact the parish office or the priest directly by email or phone. If you or a family member are in hospital and would like a visit, please inform Fr Paul Smith, or ask ward staff to contact the Hospital Priest Chaplain.

Marriage Preparation – Please speak to Fr Paul to begin the process. You will need consent from your registered parish, and Fr Paul will guide you through the paperwork and help agree on a suitable date for the wedding.

House Blessings – Fr. Paul Smith can celebrate a blessing of the home- again please call us to discuss.

School Involvement – Parishioners are warmly encouraged to support and attend school Masses and events where possible.

Children’s Liturgy – Children’s Liturgy is offered during selected Sunday Masses across the parish. Please check with your local church for availability.
